Boats ready for a start.
At the sound of a "3 minute" horn, engines are started and boats leave shore for the course. There is a large clock on shore showing time left to "start." Two minutes after the horn, the "one minute" clock is started, counting down to "zero." The boats must be behind the starting line, but are running at speed when the clock's hand reaches zero. That's when the race starts. If a boat is over early, it is penalized a full lap -- too much to make up in a 3 lap race.
