Velvet Drive Transmission
1972 Correct Craft Skier

MacSkier

The boat's transmission is a "1 to 1" Velvet Drive by Borg Warner, Model AS1-71C? or 71B?
I'll guess 71B, based on the (by hand) markings.

Here's a top view of the tranny, showing its aft "motor mounts" and the hoses running to and from the cooler. (Cooler (pictured here) is mounted forward, on port side of the engine.)

From the VD Installation manual:
"Type F, Dextron and other hydraulic fluids which meet the Detroit Diesel Allison Division of General Motors Corp. specifications for type C3 oils are recommended for use in all Velvet Drive marine gears."

The transmission has been operating properly, with no "neutral creep," so we'll just clean it up, prime and and paint it. (It weighs 100 pounds.) (Painting advice here.)

The case bolts (and two bell housing studs) holding the transmission case together also keep the case from leaking fluid. So, in order to paint the case, some other bolts were used to keep the outside of the case dry (i.e., free of leaking fluid.)

I'll guess the electrical switch pictured next is the "Neutral Safety Switch" pictured HERE.
