Dripless shaft seal
Grant MacLaren's 1972 Correct Craft Skier
MacSkier

On our 2015 St. John's River Cruise, I was very fortunate in meeting Linda and Richard Hughe, and becoming familier with their boat, Aqua Velvet. Rich installed a dripless shaft seal on the boat. Following a short investigation, I was sure I wanted to install that seal on in my '72 Skier. This is Aqua Velvet's beautiful engine:

This is the seal:

These photos are of the Skier before we rebuilt its interior. It was a mess:

That black hose (where the seal will be located) is 3-1/4" in length.

This photo was made 4/20/15 -- after the interior of the hull and the boat's floor having been rebuilt. It shows the O.D. of the Stern Tube Diameter is 1.70 inches where the seal's bellow connects.

A phone discussion with the seal's maker informed me that the 1.75 inch bellow will seal on my 1.7 inch thru-hull tube.

Catalog cut

The seal needs water for lubrication and cooling. Rich got his cooling water via a tee fitting on the transmission cooler. The tee provides the feed, while retaining a drin.

I'll probably do the same. That drain petcock will be replaced with a "tee:"

"It needed a little work, but what boat doesn't?"
