Engine Alternator
1972 Correct Craft Skier

I've had no problem with the alternator, but it has been suggested that a "one wire" alternator would result in a "cleaner" installation. So I took the original(?) Motorola alternator to Broner and asked them for a "one wire" (marine) unit to replace it.

In the photo below, the original unit is on the left, the "one wire" (75 amp) is on the right, and another (60 amp) unit is in the middle. The middle unit is not a "one wire" but is the alternator found on new (current) Mercruiser marine conversions. (Turns out that the middle unit interferes with the head, just like the "one wire." So, we'll go with the "one wire.")

Here's a view of the engine with the alternator removed.

Here are two photos of the "one wire" unit, showing where it contacts the cylinder head -- before the mounting bolt is tightened. When this was reported to Broner, they loaned me the unit pictured between the other two above, thinking it might be smaller. It wasn't, so we'll go with the "one wire."

We will grind the starboard cylinder head where the alternator now touches it. There is plenty of material at this location in the head. (We considered moving the other pulleys forward, but that was impractical.)

3/13/14 -- Today, we did some grinding on the starboard cylinder head, so now it fits:
